As members of the Mohawk High School class of 2008 take different paths toward their futures, they remembered two classmates who could not be with them at graduation ceremonies Friday night at Mohawk School.
Less than a day after a fatal accident claimed the life of fellow classmate Carrie Payne, community members, facility, staff and alumnus of the Mohawk Local School District gathered in the school’s gymnasium to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class.
The class honored Payne and Matt Beach, who died in a car accident during the class’s freshman year, in a slide show that featured pictures from a candlelight vigil the students held at the school from about midnight until 1 a.m. Friday.

Mohawk senior killed in 3-car crash

In what is supposed to be a time of celebrating accomplishments, one local school district’s graduation ceremonies will be a bit more somber tonight following a fatal accident Thursday night in Hancock County.
Carrie Payne, a Mohawk senior who was to graduate tonight, was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Ohio 568, just east of TR 215, in Marion Township in Hancock County, according to a release from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident left three others hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
Around 5:51 p.m., Payne, Sycamore, was driving a white 2001 Chevy Tracker eastbound on Ohio 568 when she went left of center into the westbound lane and hit the driver side and rear bumber of a westbound maroon 2006 Honda CR-V, driven by Roger Brickner that had swerved off the road to avoid the collision.
She went off the north side of the roadway before returning to the westbound lane, where she struck the front driver’s side of a white 1992 GMC van driven by Anthony Simon, Findlay.

COLUMBUS — An area resident received quite an honor from the Ohio Department of Aging on Thursday.
Joy Tarbert, of Bucyrus, was one of 10 older Ohioans to be inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame during a ceremony Thursday at the Capitol Theatre in Columbus. Tarbert joins with more than 300 individuals who have been inducted into the hall since its inception in 1977.
The induction came as quite a surprise for Tarbert, who served for many years as an advocate for mentally disabled children.
“I mean, the reason I did all those things is because the people needed me,” Tarbert said. “I didn’t do it for any accolades, so that wasn’t even part of it. I did it because of a need and I guess I just work day by day on it. Whatever come up, we took it and ran with it. I’m just happy I was able to make a mark. At least I made my mark while I was here. And I think this is wonderful that they honor people while they’re here to enjoy it.
