CAREY -
After feeling the disappointment of an early postseason departure, Carey's softball team was not about to have a second letdown with a shot at earning the school's first-ever Midland Athletic League title hanging in the balance.
Behind the arm of pitcher Autum Harley and an offensive barrage, the Blue Devils rolled to a 10-0 six-inning run rule victory against Fremont St. Joseph on Wednesday to gain a share of the league title. They will share the MAL championship with Fostoria St. Wendelin, as both teams compiled an 8-2 record in league play.
"We talked after the Arcadia loss (in the sectional tournament) that we still had a lot to play for," Carey coach Eric Mullholand said. "As bad as we felt then, I told the girls to feel great. We'll feel just as good probably if you go out and finish out and win the league. It's something they'll be proud of and glad about and remember the rest of their lives. It's disappointing not to be in (the tournament), but we got tough league teams in there that are still going and we're routing for them."
The league title capped off a season full of adversity for the veteran squad.

FINDLAY -
The Riverdale baseball team's impressive postseason run came to an abrupt end on Wednesday night in a 13-2 district semifinal loss to Toledo Christian at Findlay High School.
The bad news for the Falcons of course lies in their six-inning double digit season-ending loss. The good news is they were not even supposed to be in this position in the first place after an 0-22 finish a year ago.
"I told the kids when we got off the bus regardless of what happens, it starts tonight, meaning next year," Riverdale head coach Wes Davis said. "Nobody on the planet Earth thought we'd be here. I told them to keep their heads up, they got a sectional championship to put in their gunbelt."

ARLINGTON -
Riverdale struck for two runs in the first inning against Arlington in the Division IV softball sectional finals on Tuesday at Arlington.
That was all Falcons needed as starter Kaylee Sheets and her defense held off Arlington in a 3-1 victory.
Riverdale (12-8) advances to the district finals for the second time in four years. The Falcons play top-ranked Convoy Crestview (23-1) at 5 p.m. at Elida. The Knights defeated Lincolnview, 5-0, Tuesday as Chelsey Lare threw a no-hitter against the Lancers.
"The same thing happened three years ago," Riverdale coach Doug Ebright said. "We went there and played Crestview and we gave them a heck of a game (in a 2-0 loss). We're just going to go down there and will play as hard as we can and see what happens."

NEW RIEGEL -
There were plenty of indications that Tuesday's Division IV district semifinal game between New Riegel and Mohawk at New Riegel could be a low-scoring game.
Because of that, the Blue Jackets used some small ball to score two runs early and then got in an offensive groove, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and taking a 6-0 victory against the Warriors.
New Riegel often has challenged Mohawk in Midland Athletic League play, and the Blue Jackets, behind a five-hit pitching performance from Taylor Mathias, finally were able to break through with a victory Tuesday.
"I guess it's the big cliché, the monkey off our back," New Riegel coach Jamie Lininger said. "I don't even know when the last time we beat these guys was, and to beat them the way we did shows we were focused and relaxed. It felt different. It was almost like they knew it was going to be there (Tuesday). They hit the ball hard, bunted when we needed to bunt."
The Blue Jackets (17-8) advance to play Hopewell-Loudon in the district final at 5 p.m. Thursday at Old Fort.
One single in the second inning and one in the fourth inning produced two runs for New Riegel, which through five innings had only those two hits.
