SYCAMORE -
As tight as the Midland Athletic League softball race has been this year, it should not be surprising that one hit was the difference between rivals Mohawk and Carey on Monday.
Mohawk's Jackie Messersmith pitched a no-hitter and delivered the only hit of the game against Carey pitcher Autumn Harley - a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning - to lead the Warriors to a 1-0 victory.
The win keeps Mohawk (13-6, 7-2 MAL) in contention for its seventh straight Midland Athletic League title. It leaves a slew of teams trailing Fostoria St. Wendelin (7-1 MAL) by one game in the loss column, including the Blue Devils (13-6, 5-2 MAL), New Riegel (6-2 MAL) and North Baltimore (5-2 MAL). Hopewell-Loudon (5-3 MAL) could have made the race even tighter, but it dropped a 7-4 decision to St. Wendelin on Monday.

SYCAMORE - Mohawk pitcher Adam Hohman more than made up for six walks by striking out 15 in a two-hit 5-0 shutout of Carey on Monday.
Carey was able to put runners on base, but those runners had little chance of advancing with the ball seldom being put in play by the Blue Devils.
"Adam pitched a good game," Mohawk coach Eric Hoover said. "He walked too many, but I think they only had two hits, so I'm pretty happy with that. He was able to get a lot of strikeouts so I guess that made up for most of the walks."
