Lorena Ochoa pulls away in Safeway
SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. (AP) - Lorena Ochoa had a breakout season in 2006, and an even better one in 2007.
This year could be even better. She's entered three tournaments, and won two of them.
The 26-year-old sensation from Mexico defended her Safeway International title with a runaway, seven-shot victory on Sunday.
Emily Bastel, Upper Sandusky, shot a 3-over 75 in the final round Sunday to finish tied for 67th place at 3 under. Her performance led her to win $2,991, the first earnings she has received on the tour this season.
Ochoa shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 22-under 266, the lowest score, by four shots, in the five years the tournament has been held at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.
The victory was the 19th of her career. Sixteen of them have come since 2006. But although she's become the dominant player in women's golf, she said nothing is taken for granted.
"Once I enter the tournament, I know I can win and I play to win," she said. "I always give 100 percent with me and my game. But I don't think it's good to get into a position where you expect to win."
Ochoa turned the tournament into a rout with birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes, then punctuated her 19th career tour victory with a birdie tap-in on the 18th.
