Some local organizations now have a building to call their own in Wyandot County.
The Hancock-Hardin-Wyandot-Putnam Community Action Commission opened a building in Upper Sandusky located at 559 S. Warpole St. The newly-renovated building used to be Houpt's Carpet Store. The main office for the commission is in Findlay.
The Upper Sandusky building, which is 6,000 square feet, contains an office for Community Services and the Winter Crisis Program, formerly known as emergency Home Energy Assistance Program. It also contains an office and a classroom for Head Start preschool.
Community Services and Winter Crisis, staffed by Ashley Woodard, used to be in a rented space at Nantucket Green Apartments, Nantucket Drive. She now will be in the new office on Tuesdays, and applications currently are being taken for the Winter Crisis Program.

A new program designed for youth facing substance abuse or dependence is being offered at Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services of Wyandot County, and focuses on introspection and young people learning more about themselves.
Youth who take Seven Challenges will have the opportunity to learn more about themselves and their beliefs from journals that are included in the program, said Julie Williams, clinical counselor and chemical dependency counselor at Firelands.
"The goal is for the young people to gain insight and to be able to make better choices for themselves," Williams said.

Upper Sandusky pair sign Division I letters of intent

Ben Bastel, Greg Micheli, Jake Diebler and Jon Diebler. Within the past three years, each has gone on from Upper Sandusky High School to major college programs.
On Wednesday night, two more joined that list. Clare Aubry signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Toledo, and Rebecca Gamby committed to play softball at Marshall University.
Even though it has been a regular occurrence lately, it is something really quite special, Upper Sandusky girls basketball coach Andra Bell said.
"I was telling my players at practice that they're really very, very spoiled in this whole deal," she said to a crowd gathered to celebrate the signings. "Since they've been in high school, they've had Jake Diebler go to Valparaiso and Jon of course to Ohio State and Greg Micheli is going to playing for his second national championship at Mount Union most probably, and what our kiddos don't realize - I know those of you who have been community members forever do - is it doesn't happen very often at Upper Sandusky."
Gamby is in her first year at Upper after previously playing for Elgin.
"I haven't known Rebecca very long, but meeting her family and getting to know her and her family, I'd like to say, ‘Sorry about your luck, Elgin,' because we picked up a real diamond here," Bell said. "I can't speak much for softball, but I know (softball) coach (Keith) Diebler expects to do very well and win the Northern Ohio League and so do we."
