Union students participate in Toledo spelling bee final
TOLEDO - Sixty-five students recently participated in The Toledo Blade's spelling bee final at Owens Community College. Upper Sandusky's Union Middle School was represented by Hannah Cole and Allie Smith.
Cole is a daughter of Bill and Jennifer Cole. Smith is a daughter of Mike and Billie Smith.
Cole finished within the last group of 20 with the word "percolator."
Smith was in the final eight, ending with the word "pantomime."
Both girls were spotlighted spellers on a Toledo news program.

CHIP applications available April 1
All Wyandot County residents with low or moderate income interested in taking advantage of the recently funded Wyandot County Community Housing Improvement Program still have an opportunity, as second round funds are available for owner rehabilitation and down payment assistance or owner rehab.
Participants in the owner rehabilitation program may receive up to $30,000 per home, while those receiving down payment assistance or owner rehab may receive up to $5,000 for closing and/or down payment and up to $30,000 per home.
Applications for assistance are available beginning April 1 and can be picked up any time, but a person must apply for the program by making an appointment. The second round deadline for owner rehabilitation is April 29 and the other program is on a first come first serve basis.
The CHIP office, located in the Wyandot County Commissioners Office, 109 S. Sandusky Ave., Upper Sandusky, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays or can be reached by calling Michelle Wagner at 419-294-6400, ext. 105.

Annual breakfast
The annual Special Forces pancake breakfast is slated for April 5 from 6-10:30 at McDonald’s in Upper Sandusky. The breakfast contains all-you-can-eat pancakes and one sausage for $2 and tickets can be purchased from Upper Sandusky High School, Special Forces members or McDonald’s. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the day of the event. The money raised from the event helps pay for trips to Cedar Point and the Columbus Zoo.
