Spring blaze
Firefighters from Carey, Upper Sandusky and McCutchenville responded to the scene of a house fire at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the home of Dean Sout, 12947 TH 100A, Carey. Carey Fire Chief Jay Gretzinger said no one was home when the fire started in a wood burner inside an attached garage. Around 8 p.m., the house was knocked down by firefighters. Gretzinger said the home started out as a one-bedroom brick residence and when additions were made, the exterior bricks walls were left. About 18 Carey firefighters responded to the scene, along with nine fire apparatuses. Carey EMS also was on scene. A cat died in the blaze.

County will not see increase in insurance
By AARON KORTE
Editor

Wyandot County Commissioner Mike Wheeler attended a meeting Thursday morning with other county department heads at the county recycling center to discuss the county's insurance policy.
The county participates in a program called CORSA, which stands for County Risk Sharing Authority.
For 20 years, the county has used this program to buy its property and general liability insurance in conjunction with 62 other counties in Ohio.
The rates will not go up for the county in the 21st year of participation, despite major flooding throughout the state. Wheeler said none of the county buildings were damaged last year due to them being on high ground and the other counties that were significantly affected by the flooding are not part of the CORSA group.
Last year, insurance cost the county $170,434 through CORSA. The deductible will continue to be $2,500 when the policy is renewed May 1.
"We can't afford to do what was done in the past," commissioner Ed Kuenzli said. "We certainly can't justify doing anything else."
