More than a food product
Connie Cahill, consumer spokesperson for the Ohio Soybean Council, sits with some food products that contain soy. Many advancements have been made in the soy industry lately.
Past year has seen changes in soy uses
By LAUREN SCHLOSSER

It has been a busy time for soybeans, with many advances in the soybean industry occurring in the past year.
Ford Motor Company has been using soy-based foam in vehicle seats, starting in October 2007 with Mustangs.
Significant funding efforts from Ford and the United Soybean Board and the soybean checkoff made that a reality, according to information from the magazine “Beyond the Bean.”
Typically, petroleum is an ingredient in auto seats, but Ford is attempting to replace it with soy. In 2002, Ford representatives began researching the possibility of developing soy foam for vehicle interiors. Five years later, soy flexible foam, a plastic material, was created using 5 percent soy polyol.

NAP deadline extended until Monday
By VICKI D. ORIANS
Wyandot County FSA director
Because March 15 falls on a weekend, Monday is the last day for producers to apply for the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program.
The application fee must be filed by the deadline date for 2008 spring planted crops which include forage sorghum, oats, potatoes, inter-seeded soybeans, sunflowers and all spring planted specialty crops grown for food.
The service fee is $100 per crop per county or $300 per producer per county. The fee cannot exceed a total of $900 per producer with farming interest in multiple counties. Limited resource producers may request a waiver of service fees. To qualify, a producer must be a landowner, tenant or sharecropper who shares in the risk of producing an eligible crop.
Eligible farmers and producers who suffered livestock, livestock feed and crop losses that occurred before Dec. 31, 2007 can apply to receive disaster payments.
The Farm Service Agency is accepting applications and making payments for quantity losses under Crop Disaster Program that occurred before Dec. 31. FSA currently is issuing Livestock Compensation Program and Livestock Indemnity Program payments for losses that occurred up to Feb. 28, 2007, and will soon issue payments for losses incurred during the remainder of 2007. FSA will conduct sign-up and begin making payments for quality losses under CDP this spring. More information on CDP, LCP and LIP is available online at disaster.fsa.usda.gov.
The Dairy Disaster Assistance Payment program, which provides benefits to eligible dairy producers for production losses suffered as a result of natural disasters since Jan. 1, 2005, also has been extended by the 2008 Act to cover, in addition, any 2007 disaster occurring before Dec. 31, 2007. As a result, DDAP-III sign-up, which began Dec. 3, 2007, was temporarily suspended until automation, policy, procedure and other administrative items could be updated accordingly. DDAP-III program sign-up resumed March 5 and continues through May 5. Payment amounts will not be determined until after the end of the sign-up when total applications are evaluated and funding is allocated.
