MOUNT BLANCHARD - When Maryann Holderman came to Riverdale three years ago, she did not come because the Falcons had a strong basketball program.
More than basketball success, Holderman was seeking a community to call home, she said. As the Falcons head to Columbus for Friday's Division III state semifinal basketball game, Holderman has found everything she was looking for.
"The main thing for me is my family," she said. "I wanted my family in a smaller school setting. I wanted my kids to grow up in place where I can see them every day and I can teach. That was my main objective. I'm a teacher first."
Holderman said she feels like a part of the community and enjoys both teaching and coaching at Riverdale.

MOUNT BLANCHARD - Riverdale students, staff and community members came out to show their support for the girls varsity basketball team Wednesday night, making the stands a sea of blue before the team's Division III state semifinal game against Sugarcreek Garaway on Friday.
Becky Taylor, wife of activities director Craig Taylor, announced that tickets to the game are sold out, and the crowd cheered.
High school principal Terry Huffman spoke to the team, telling them they will remember everything about the experience of playing in the state basketball tournament, and will appreciate it even more later in life.
Huffman called up two members of the 1974 boys basketball team that went to state, Gary Brown and Jack Messmer.
Craig Taylor also spoke.
