Kotterman, Kessler provide the scoring; Brown a pest on defense

LEXINGTON - The Fredericktown girls basketball team was able to stop Kayla Brown on offense, but they could not stop her on defense.
The Riverdale junior was limited to seven points on 3 of 10 shooting, but she came up with seven steals, many of them leading to easy baskets that helped the Falcons rally for a 53-47 victory against the Freddies.
And while Brown was struggling from the field, her teammates stepped up and filled the scoring void. Senior Kristi Kotterman scored 19 points and freshman Lacey Kessler came off the bench to post 14 points.
"Fredericktown held Kayla down, but they had to hold 12 other girls down," Riverdale coach Maryann Holderman said. "That is the making of a good team."
Fredericktown coach Dave Logan said his team came out with the intent of shutting down Brown and Kotterman, but the Freddies could not accomplish both.
"We did a good job keeping (Brown) from scoring, but Kristi Kotterman really hurt us," Logan said. "She made some good shots and she didn't miss many free throws.

Bowen goes unbeaten to win Match Game championship
By LONNIE McMILLAN
Sports editor
In nine previous appearances in the Wyandot Match Game Invitational tournament, Rod Bowen had never even reached the finals. In fact, he never had finished any higher than fifth place.
This year, though, he was unbeatable. He won four matches leading up to Sunday's finals at Wyandot Lanes, and made it a clean sweep by handing Don McLaughlin his second loss, 656-634, to wrap up the championship in the 23rd annual event.
“It's a huge accomplishment because of all the good bowlers," Bowen said. “Everybody who is bowling in the tournament, there's no slackers out there. It's a good tournament."
Bowen averaged better than 220 in 15 games in the tournament, but did not get off to good start Sunday. He found himself down 20 pins after bowling only a 188 in his first game.
But a second-game 275 that featured strikes in his first five frames and then five more in a row after a spare gave Bowen a 29-pin cushion going into the final game.
“I needed that to recover from the first game and kind of give myself a lead and then just stay close the last game," Bowen said.
