Falcons strengthen lead in NCC
By LONNIE McMILLAN

MOUNT BLANCHARD - The Riverdale girls basketball team came through in the clutch to take a key North Central Conference victory Saturday against Colonel Crawford, 48-32.
The Eagles (13-3, 9-2 NCC) had whittled the Falcons' lead to one point late in the third quarter, but Kayla Brown connected on a 3-pointer and Amy Fox nailed a jumper at the buzzer to give Riverdale (13-2, 9-0 NCC) a six-point cushion. From there, the Falcons' defense shut down the Eagles for the victory that gives Riverdale a two-game lead in the loss column on Colonel Crawford and Bucyrus.
"They are a very nice group of talented athletes," Colonel Crawford coach Chuck Huggins said. "They are very fundamental. That's why they are sitting at the top of the NCC right now with a 41-game NCC win streak."
Kristi Kotterman led the way with 17 points - including an 11 of 12 effort from the free-throw line - and Kelli Kotterman also reached double figures with 10 points for the Falcons.

Elgin hands Mohawk another non-conference defeat

SYCAMORE - Mohawk's boys basketball team held an advantage in both the first and third quarters, but were unable to fully recover after Elgin scored 23-points in the second quarter as they pulled away with a 67-52 non-conference victory Saturday evening.
The Warriors (8-7), who came out of the gates strong in the first quarter, were unable to keep pace with Elgin (9-6) late as they were plagued by defensive mistakes and missed opportunities, according to Mohawk coach Brent Konkle.
"It wasn't us getting bad shots, its just we weren't finishing," he said. "We missed layups, missed a wide open jump shot (and) we didn't get as many second opportunities as we got in the first, second and third quarters."
Both teams traded leads in the first quarter, before Nick Hohman delivered two straight baskets and Keith Zeigler drained a 3-pointer to give the Warriors an 18-15 edge.
