Columbus ponders ban on feeding ducks, geese on city land
COLUMBUS (AP) - Some officials in Columbus don't want people in parks feeding ducks and geese.
City Council has proposed a bill that would make feeding wildlife illegal on city property, something officials say might discourage flocks of aggressive geese, and their droppings, from settling in parks. Recreation and Parks director Alan McKnight says geese are becoming dependent on free meals of bread and crackers from well-intentioned park-goers. And now some parks are overrun with droppings, prompting health concerns.
The proposed ban is meant to discourage people from feeding wildlife, and the bill's sponsors say police won't be patrolling parks looking for children with bird feed or slices of bread.
