Swartz retires as treasurer of Wyandot County Council for Birth Defects after 31 years
By ALISSA PAOLELLA
Staff writer
Before she even imagined it would affect her life, Alice Swartz volunteered to be the treasurer of the Wyandot County Council for Birth Defects in 1976.
Thirty-one years later, Swartz, 76, is retiring from the position on the council, an organization that broke off from the March of Dimes, a national organization that works to prevent birth defects, premature births and infant mortality, to provide assistance to children and adults who are born with birth defects in Wyandot County.
Swartz, who retired from The First Citizens National Bank after 35 years, said her stepgrandson was born with mental health problems and it has allowed her to understand more fully the cause for which she was volunteering.

Returning Congress confronts war, economy,
election-year politics
WASHINGTON (AP) — Still smarting from the partisan wars of 2007, Congress confronts a sinking economy, a lingering war and election-year politics as it gets back to work for the 2008 session.
The Democratic-led House reconvenes Tuesday with the familiar scenario of having to deal with a President Bush veto. The White House objected to one provision in a massive defense bill that opened the way for lawsuits against the Iraqi government.
The defense bill contains an additional pay raise for the military and Congress is expected to quickly fix the problem, either with a veto override vote — that would probably fail — or by removing the offending provision.

BUCYRUS — It was fitting that Saturday afternoon’s girls basketball game between Wynford and Bucyrus was decided in the final seconds at the foul line.
Chelsea Hawkins scored the tying and go-ahead free throws with 13.2 seconds remaining and added two more to close out a 35-32 Redmen victory on their home floor.
The Royals (8-5, 5-4 North Central Conference) rallied from an eight-point deficit with four minutes remaining, but came up short on the night at the line, making only 4 of 13 attempts.

Laying one up
Upper Sandusky’s Alex Falk (20) drives past Tiffin Columbian’s Anthony Brown (33) on his way for a score Saturday evening. Falk had 23 points for the Rams, but it was not enough as the Tornadoes won, 86-72.
Tornadoes stop losing streak against Rams

TIFFIN — Upper Sandusky had defeated Tiffin Columbian all seven times it had played Tiffin Columbian during the past four seasons.
With one more chance to finally take down the Rams, the Tornadoes’ seniors made sure not to go 0-8 with a big fourth quarter to pull away for an 86-72 victory Saturday night.
While most of Columbian’s players were not varsity members during all seven defeats, they were ready for their last chance against Upper Sandusky after dropping a one-point affair earlier this season.
