Upper defense excels in win against Bucyrus
By BRANDON DRAKE
Staff writer

BUCYRUS - The old saying goes that offense sells tickets and defense wins championships.
After allowing 97.9 points per game through the nine games of the season, Upper Sandusky's boys basketball team wanted to work on polish up its defensive schemes against Bucyrus.
The Rams accomplished their goal rather easily, allowing just 17 points in the first half and forcing a total of 27 turnovers en route to a 74-59 victory against the Redmen.
"After three quarters (Friday against Bellevue), the wheels came off," said Upper Sandusky coach Keith Diebler, as the Rams gave up their least amount of points all season. "(Saturday) we worked on it again ... and it's an issue we're working with and (Saturday), except for three minutes, we played pretty well on defense."
The stymieing defense effort did not allow the Redmen (3-9) much breathing room offensively.
In fact, Bucyrus finished 20 of 62 (32.3 percent) from the floor - including going 3 of 13 (23.1 percent) from the 3-point line. That, coupled with a dismal 10 of 32 (31.3 percent) performance from the free throw line, put the Redmen out of contention early.

Vanlue's Kloepfer overwhelms Riverdale

VANLUE - Riverdale had no answer on defense for Vanlue's Josh Kloepfer, who dominated the Falcons with 37 points and 17 rebounds in a 55-45 victory on Saturday.
Klopefer helped the Wildcats (9-2) hold a 35-17 rebounding advantage. He also was key in Vanlue establishing an 18-5 lead after one quarter that kept Vanlue in control.
Riverdale (4-6) outscored Vanlue 13-12 in the second quarter, and Vanlue held a 12-11 edge in the third quarter. The Falcons trimmed the deficit a bit in the final quarter with a 16-13 scoring advantage.
Taylor Kin and Ryan Frey scored 13 points each for Riverdale, and Landon Kessler added 10 points.
Nick Lee had 13 points and dished out seven assists for the Wildcats. Other than Kloepfer and Lee, Vanlue totalled only five points.
Vanlue was 20 of 51 shooting and made good on 14 of 22 free throw attempts. Riverdale connected on 15 of 39 shots from the field and 15 of 25 attempts at the line. Neither team was on the mark from beyond the arc, with Riverdale going 0 of 6 and Vanlue making 1 of 7.
The Falcons travel to Crestline for a 6 p.m. game Friday.

Van Buren comes through in 2nd half
By LONNIE McMILLAN

CAREY - In the first half, Carey's one-two punch of forward Michael Dennis and guard Derrick Cole overwhelmed Van Buren on Saturday night.
But the defending regional runner-up Black Knights adjusted in the second half and defeated the Blue Devils, 65-52.
Dennis and Cole combined for 41 points - 29 of them in the first half while the Blue Devils (4-5) built a 38-34 advantage. Carey led 21-13 after one quarter, but Van Buren (9-2) began its run late in the second quarter with point guard Chase Marshall setting the tone.
"Intensity was our key," Van Buren boys basketball coach Jack Frost said. "It was a blessing our point guard Marshall hit three 3s in the second quarter, and then we picked up our defensive intensity and took the lead early in the third quarter and kept the pressure up on them."
