Would-be jewelry thieves freed from elevator in OH

CINCINNATI (AP) — Police say would-be thieves at a suburban Cincinnati jewelry store got trapped in an elevator while fleeing and were rescued by firefighters.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responding to the break-in Thursday night in Sycamore Township heard noises coming from an elevator near the store. They found the 57-year-old man and 61-year-old woman inside, along with 26 diamond rings, a ski mask and screwdrivers stashed in the elevator’s ceiling.

Authorities say the pair apparently tried to escape to a car in a basement lot using a stairway but didn’t realize it stops at the first floor, so they switched to the elevator and somehow got stuck.

They’re being charged with breaking and entering and having criminal tools. The woman also was found with heroin and faces drug-related charges.
