Prosecutor: Suspended Ohio sheriff should go back to jail

FREMONT (AP) — A special prosecutor says an Ohio sheriff charged with stealing medications from prescription drug disposal drop boxes has violated terms of his bond and should go back to jail.

The prosecutor says Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer has violated the terms by having contact with witnesses and people in the sheriff’s office.

Overmyer’s attorney says the move to send the sheriff back to jail is timed to next week’s election and an attempt to influence voters.

He still is on the ballot for sheriff despite the charges against him and his suspension from office.

Overmyer in August was accused of deceiving doctors into giving him painkillers and misusing department funds. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

He has suggested that the investigation was politically motivated.
