ARLINGTON — Wynford’s Nate Smith was the individual medalist, but Upper Sandusky was the team champion in the North Central Conference golf tournament Tuesday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course.
Smith topped Colonel Crawford’s Mitch Cook in a one-hole playoff after both players shot 79s.
The Rams shot a 377 to beat out Galion by seven strokes. Ontario placed third with a 350 and Wynford was fourth with a 356. Riverdale was ninth with a 395.
Daniel Newell paced the Rams’ victory with an 81 that included a 41 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. Alec Oney and Stuart Young both shot 83s, while Trent Howard rounded out the Upper Sandusky team score with a 90.
“We’re happy to get this win,” Oney said. “The conditions made it challenging, but we all stuck with it. We knew we had to.”
Wynford’s Nate Smith putts during the North Central Conference golf tournament Tuesday at Lincoln Hills Golf Course. Smith shot a 79 and beat Colonel Crawford’s Mitch Cook in a one-hole playoff to claim medalist honors.
Smith shot a 39 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. Teammate Michael Powers finished only one stroke back with an 80, but Wynford’s next two scores dropped off significantly. Logan Leitzy scored a 94 and Brayden Dunlap carded a 103.
Zach Bowman led Riverdale with an 88. Seth Thomas shot a 100 and Luke Bowman was one stroke back with a 101. Conrad Corbin posted the Falcons’ final score of 106.
Other top scores were Ontario’s Tyler Wilson’s 81 and Galion’s Eric Powell’s 82.
With the victory, Upper Sandusky now has 26 points in the NCC standings, one better than Galion in the Black Division, but the Rams have two dual matches remaining and the Tigers have only one. That means the Rams will clinch the championship with a win in either match or a loss by Galion.
“This is a great moment, but we still have work to do,” Newell said.
Crestline, despite finishing seventh in the tournament, locked up at least a share of the NCC Silver Division championship. The Bulldogs have 14 points – four more than Buckeye Central – with two matches remaining. Each dual victory is worth two points.
Riverdale’s Ray Rose putts Tuesday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course during the North Central Conference tournament. Rose shot a 119 and the Falcons finished ninth as a team.
Wynford takes on Ontario at 3:30 p.m. today at Twin Lakes Golf Course. Upper Sandusky faces Bucyrus at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Hills Golf Course, while Riverdale goes up against Crestline at 4 p.m. Thursday at Valley View Golf Course.
