NEW WASHINGTON — Upper Sandusky’s boys took third place overall and second among Black Division schools to lead area teams Friday in the North Central Conference track and field meet.
Colonel Crawford topped Ontario, 138-109, for first overall, with the Rams scoring 80.3 points. Wynford was seventh with 55 points and Riverdale eighth with 43 points.
Ontario was the girls winner with a 97-93.5 advantage over Bucyrus. Wynford was third with 71.5 points, Riverdale was seventh with 56 points and Upper Sandusky was eighth with 54 points.
“We probably could have had a little bit better meet,” Upper Sandusky coach Ed Arnold said. “We were just out of winning the big school division, but overall, we had a good performance. We scored in just about every event. … Overall, we had a good day, not our best day, but we had a pretty solid day.”
As usual, the Rams got a win from Evan Logsdon in the high jump as he cleared 6-2. Teammate Brennen Miller was third in the event at 6-0 and he also took third place in the long jump at 18-6.25.
Gyen Musgrave had a second-place finish for Upper Sandusky in the 100 dash in 11.83. Garrett Miller was second in the 3200 run in 10:25.08 and third in the 1600 run in 4:40.81.

Near the front

Riverdale’s Hannah Frey (front) and Upper Sandusky’s Halee Stief (center) pace themselves in the 1600 run Friday in the North Central Conference meet. The Falcons and Rams finished seventh and eighth, respectively, as teams.

Riverdale began the meet strong with the team of Gage Hankins, Justin Wells, Chad Pever and Jordan Conover winning the 3200 relay in 8:24.96.
“I think it went about as well as it probably could have,” Riverdale coach Jeremy Kloepfer said. “We had a lot of kids PR for us and when kids are going out there and PRing, what more can you ask for? It’s just something that I’m very proud of these kids for doing.”
Individually, Conover had the team’s best finish, placing second in the 800 run in 2:04.59. Tré Headington was third in the pole vault, clearing 12-0, while Kolten Martin was fourth in the 400 dash in 53.58.
Nate Brown was Wynford’s top performer, winning the long jump at 19-2.5 and placing fourth in the 100 dash in 11.94.
“He did really well in the long jump,” Wynford coach Brad Ruffener said. “It was the best he’s jumped in a while. Our throwers did a phenomenal job. They’re really starting to throw with some aggression.”
John Miller was third in the discus with a distance of 148-4, with Kyle Heinlen throwing 143-8 to take fifth. Daniel Blank was fourth in the pole vault at 11-0.
Corrie Ruffner was one of the meet’s top performers, winning the 100 hurdles in 15.50 and the 300 hurdles in 47.09. She also placed third in the 200 dash in 27.57 and was part of the Royals’ second-place 1600 relay team that took off five seconds from its most recent effort.
Lydie Miller tied for third in the high jump at 4-10 and Brenna Quinn (33-10.75) and Sam Lambert (106-0) were fourth in the shot put and discus, respectively.
“At the beginning of the week I was hoping maybe runner-up (as a team),” Wynford coach Julie Crall said. “Today when we got here, I was thinking third or fourth and I think we ended up like fifth. We’re still very young with four seniors and one junior.”

Exchange time

Wynford (left) and Upper Sandusky (right) make exchanges during the 800 relay Friday in the North Central Conference meet at Buckeye Central.

Riverdale’s top performance came from Sarah hunter in the 400 dash, a second-place finish in 1:02.25.
Hannah Frey was third in the 1600 run in 5:49.17 and second in the 3200 run in 12:42.22.
“We’re very proud of our girls’ efforts,” coach Amber Warren said. “We had a lot of improvements and that’s what we’ve really been working for.”
Warren also said the Falcons made major improvements in their relays, largely due to work on handoffs.
As far as a team place, things did not work out quite as well as hoped for Upper Sandusky’s girls.
“Today was a little rougher than we were hoping for,” Upper Sandusky coach Tim Pohlman said. “We were hoping to score at least in the middle of the meet and we ended up kind of in the tail end of it, but that has nothing to do with the girls not giving their best effort. They all ran real well. We had a couple little hiccups, but for the most part, we did as well as we could, and I’m pretty proud of the kids.”
Marissa Linhart led the Rams with a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 16.39. Freshman Mallory Weininger took second in the high jump at 4-10, Tayler Daughenbaugh was fourth in the long jump at 15-1.5 and Anna Massara cleared 8-0 to finish fourth in the pole vault.
District competition is next for all teams. Upper Sandusky competes in the Division II meet at Fostoria with girls starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday and boys at the same time Wednesday. Division III competition starts 4 p.m. Thursday with Wynford and Riverdale competing at Bucyrus.
