BUCYRUS — Upper Sandusky’s No. 2 doubles team of Evan Scheck and Danial Maltsbarger captured the North Central Conference championship, while the Rams’ other four entrants finished as runners-up in the league tournament Saturday at Bucyrus.
Scheck and Maltsbarger thumped the top-seeded team from Bucyrus, Brandon Keener and Mark Musick, 6-3, 6-0, in the title match at No. 2 doubles.
All four of the other title matches were against Ontario, and all four went the way of the Warriors, with the closest being at No. 1 doubles, where third-seeded Tyler Wilson and Nick Hamel edged Tyler Rice and Seth Sprang, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
Ontario’s Jacob Byrd topped Upper Sandusky’s Trevor Barth in the No. 1 singles final, 6-4, 6-0, while at No. 2 singles, Brandon Wagner downed Jacob Courtright, 7-5, 6-0. Seth Bryd was the No. 3 singles champion with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Brice Arnold.
Scheck and Maltsbarger earn All-NCC first-team status by virtue of their victory, while all the other Rams picked up second-team all-league honors.
Scores from the first-round matches were not available.
Upper Sandusky has an opportunity to avenge its losses in a 4:15 p.m. match today at home against Ontario that will determine the NCC leader in the final week of the season.
