Upper Sandusky’s Brice Arnold steps back and makes contact with a shot in a second-round doubles match. He and Jacob Courtright topped a Bucyrus duo in the second-round match but lost in the quarterfinals.

SHELBY — The Upper Sandusky tennis team went 5-5 in Division II sectional action at Shelby on Thursday.
Trevor Barth went 2-1 in singles action by defeating Galion’s Scott Kidwell in his first match, but lost against No. 3 seed Rene Betance, of Mansfield St. Peters. He would have advanced to district competition had he won.
Seth Sprang defeated Shelby’s Schyler Robertson, but lost to Bucyrus’ Matt Musick in three sets, while Tyler Rice was shut out in his opening match, 6-0, 6-0, against the No. 4 seed in Ontario’s Jacob Byrd.
The doubles team of Jacob Courtright and Brice Arnold defeated Bucyrus’ Seth Chandler and Conner Johnson, but lost out to the No. 2-seeded doubles team from Lexington.
Danial Maltsbarger and Evan Scheck defeated Galion’s Alex Barker and Kyle Solomen, but fell to the top-seeded team from Lexington in their second match.
The Rams close out their season with a North Central Conference title match-up against Ontario at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Leaping shot

Upper Sandusky’s Seth Sprang leaps while connecting with the ball in Division II sectional singles action Thursday at Shelby. Sprang won his first match but was eliminated in the second round.

Upper Sandusky remains one game up in the NCC  Black Division standings as Ontario sits in second place. The two teams will resume two postponed matches as their first meeting on April 25, is tied at 2. Courtright and Brandon Wagner are in the third set of their No. 2 singles match, while there is no team score yet from their second meeting on Monday. If the Rams win either match, they win the league title outright. If Ontario wins both matches, they win the title.
