MARION — The 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will be held the week of June 23.
The torch run unites departments and agencies throughout the state that work together toward raising awareness for Special Olympics Ohio. Torch run participants run or ride bikes in planned routes throughout Ohio, leading to the opening ceremonies at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University on June 28.
Officers pass the “Flame of Hope” from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, allowing local community members to watch officers working together.
Through the combined efforts of local law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio, $580,000 was raised for Special Olympics Ohio in 2012.
Locally, the torch run will arrive around 11:45 a.m. June 27 in Carey to meet up with the Carey Area Chamber of Commerce’s summer picnic. After a short ceremony with the Special Olympians, the torch will be carried to Upper Sandusky for a brief stop at the Wyandot County Courthouse and then on to Harrison Smith Park.
