Royals girls 2nd at Bucyrus

Triple winner

Wynford’s Corri Ruffener attacks the first jump of Saturday’s 100 hurdle race. Ruffener won the event (16.47) as well as the 300 hurdles (47.01) and 1600 relay (4:15.43).

BUCYRUS — Area athletes qualified for regionals in 20 events Saturday in the completion of the Division III district tournament at Bucyrus.
Most of those came from the girls side of competition, led by Wynford, which finished second in the team standings with 81 points. Colonel Crawford was the winner with 95 points. Mohawk placed fifth with 58 points and Riverdale was eighth with 36 points.
Corri Ruffener placed first in both the 100 hurdles (16.47) and the 300 hurdles (47.01). She also joined up with Kristen Schiefer, Amber Gottfried and Ellie Richmond to take first place in the 1600 relay in 4:15.43.
The Royals’ 400 relay team of Brooke Miller, Sara Brown, Lydie Miller and Gottfried also advanced to the regional meet with a fourth-place finish in 53.28.
Gottfried won the high jump by clearing 5-0, Richmond was third in the 1600 run in 5:37.92, and Samantha Lambert took the final regional-qualifying spot for the Royals, placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 111-3.
Julia Daniel grabbed first place in the 3200 run in 12:21.78, beating out teammate Heather Daniel, who took second in 12:37.47.
Julia Daniel, Lynsey Trusty, Ashley Parker and Kayla Risner teamed up for first place in the 3200 relay in 10:13.57. Trusty also was a regional qualifier in the 800 run, taking third place in 2:29.72.

Early leader

Riverdale’s Tyson Frey led the 1600 run pack after the first lap of Saturday’s Division III track and field district at Bucyrus. Frey did not place in the event.

Riverdale’s only individual qualifier was Hannah Frey, who was third in the 3200 run in 12:38.87.
The Falcons’ 800 relay team of Sarah Hunter, Kristen Evans, Kelsey Pope and Karen Wise advanced with a third-place finish in 1:51.02.
Among the boys, Wynford’s Nate Brown was the top performer. He was first in the long jump at 20-2, placed third in the 200 dash in 23.75 and was fourth in the 100 dash in 11.90.
He will be joined at regionals by teammate John Miller, who was the district discus champion with a throw of 155-6.
Riverdale’s Jordan Conover advanced with a third-place finish in the 800 run, completing the race in 2:01.46. He also was part of the Falcons’ qualifying 3200 relay team that also included Gage Hankins, Justin Wells and Chad Pever. They were fourth in 8:25.69.
Mohawk’s boys did not advance any athletes to regional competition, suffering a few close misses.
Levi Edgington was fifth in the 800 run in 2:01.88 and Shane Hoerig also missed by one spot in the 3200 run, finishing in 10:47.48. The Warriors’ 800 relay team took fifth place in 1:36.17.
Also placing for Mohawk were Jarred Shellhouse, 100 dash, seventh, 12.25; Austin Morter, high jump, tied for seventh, 5-6; the 1600 relay team, sixth, 3:34.91; and the 400 relay team, eighth, 46.96.

One spot away

The Mohawk 800 relay team of Austin Eaton, Jake McMillion, Jarred Shellhouse and Grant Ekleberry finished one spot away from moving on to regional competition as the Warriors placed fifth with a time of 1:36.17.

Wynford’s other placers were Ryan Fortner, high jump, sixth, 5-8; Levi Schafer, pole vault, seventh, 11-6; Daniel Blank, pole vault, tied for eighth, 11-0; and Kallan Stiles, 400 dash, eighth, 56.76.
Riverdale’s 1600 relay team just missed in fifth place in 3:32.55 and the 800 relay team was sixth in 1:37.39. Adam Fox was sixth in both the shot put (43-7.5) and the discus (129-2), while Tré Headington took fifth in the pole vault at 11-6. Teammate Seth Knoll tied for eighth in the same event by clearing 11-0, while Conover was tied for seventh in the high jump at 5-6.
Among the girls, the Falcons had a trio of close misses for regional qualifying. Hunter was fifth in the 400 dash in 1:03.63 and Frey took fifth in the 1600 run in 5:44.74. The Falcons also were fifth in the 1600 relay in 4:20.49.
Other placers included Wise, 200 dash, seventh, 28.45; Anna Penwell, 800 run, sixth, 2:40.72; Hunter, long jump, seventh, 14-8.25; Laura Renteria, pole vault, sixth, 8-0; and the 3200r relay team, seventh, 11:05.43.
Mohawk’s Ashley Parker just missed the cut in fifth place in the 800 run in 2:35.64, matching the place of Jessie Babcock, who cleared 4-8 in the high jump. Lydia Hoepf tied for seventh in the same event at 4-6. Kristen Weininger was seventh in the 300 hurdles in 54.11 and Olivia Welter was eighth in the pole vault at 7-0. The Warriors were fifth in the 800 relay in 1:52.02.
Madison Graham had the closest miss for Wynford, placing fifth in the pole vault at 8-0. Others to place were Brooke Miller, eighth in both the 100 dash (13.82) and the long jump (14-7.5); Schiefer, sixth in the 400 dash in 1:04.53; Kinzee Richmond, seventh in the 3200 run in 13:41.36; the 800 relay team, sixth in 1:52.09; Brenna Quinn, sixth in both the shot put (32-11) and the discus (105-6); Lambert, seventh in the shot put at 31-5.75; and Lydie Miller, sixth in the high jump at 4-8.
Regional competition begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday with girls from the Bucyrus district advancing to compete at Tiffin Columbian and boys moving on to compete at Fairfield Union near Lancaster.
