Powers wins 2nd HOJGA tourney

Wynford’s Nate Smith sinks a putt on No. 9 at Pine Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday. He shot an 84 to finish 12th in the Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association tournament. Teammate Michael Powers was the winner with a 71.

MOUNT GILEAD — Wynford’s Michael Powers won for the second time this season in Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association action, winning at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Mount Gilead on Tuesday.
Powers blew away the competition by firing an even-par 71, six strokes better than Mount Vernon’s Chris Grady and Gilead Christian’s Jason Zeigler, who tied for second in the 16-18 division with 77s.
The senior Royal shot a 38 on the front nine, putting him in a first-place tie, but he dominated the back nine with a 2-under par 33 that allowed him to pull away from the field. He had six birdies on the day, shooting below par on Nos. 4, 5, 11, 12, 13 and 17.
Upper Sandusky’s Alec Oney took fifth place with a 79 that included three birdies, while teammate Daniel Newell scored a seventh-place 81, also with three birdies.

Wynford’s Nate Smith shot an 84 to finish 12th, while Upper Sandusky’s Trent Howard was 17th with an 87 that included two birdies.
Big Walnut’s Kyle Gose won the 13-15 division by scoring a 75 to beat out Pleasant’s Ethan Blough by three strokes.
In that division, Mohawk’s Katelynn Kinley took ninth place with a 91. She had a strong second nine holes, shooting a 41.
River Valley’s David Chapman won the 12-and-younger division by shooting a nine-hole 49. Olentangy’s Riley Dean was two strokes back, while Upper Sandusky’s Brett Montgomery placed fifth with a 56.
Golfers are back in action Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park in Kenton.
