Mohawk’s Weinandy earns coaching honor

Mohawk had six players named to the All-Midland Athletic League softball team and coach Jenny Weinandy earned Coach of the Year honors.

The Warriors’ Kasey Adelsperger, Sarah Runion and Dani Tyree all were first-team selections and were joined by Carey’s Taylor Fletcher. Second-team honorees included Carey’s Ali Rymer and Mohawk’s Ashley Cooper and Taylor McClain, while honorable mention picks were Carey’s Erin Boes and Makenzie Wentling and Mohawk’s Molli Cartwright.
New Riegel sophomore Taylor Kirian was named the Player of the Year.
Weinandy earned top coaching honors by leading Mohawk to a share of the Midland Athletic League championship with a 10-1 league mark and 21-6 record overall. The Warriors advanced farther in tournament play than any other league team, reaching the Division IV regional finals.
Adelsperger, a sophomore pitcher, was the MAL’s leader in ERA at 1.02. She went 19-5 with 197 strikeouts in 158 innings. At the plate, she batted .459 with six home runs and 30 RBIs.
Runion, a junior shortstop, batted .413 with 27 runs scored and 11 stolen bases, while Tyree, a senior catcher, was a .278 hitter with two home runs and 20 runs scored.

Fletcher, a sophomore center fielder, batted .347 with 27 RBIs and 30 runs scored.
Rymer was a sophomore pitcher who posted a 2.84 ERA and 13-11 record and was a .360 hitter with 23 runs scored and 21 RBIs.
Cooper, a senior first baseman, batted .382 with 29 runs scored and 19 RBIs. Sophomore teammate McClain held a .410 average with three home runs, 31 RBIs and 29 runs scored.
Cartwright, a senior second baseman, batted .270 with 12 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
Boes, a senior third baseman, was a .330 hitter with 19 RBIs and 17 runs scored, while Wentling, a sophomore catcher, batted .312 with 22 runs scored and 21 RBIs.
Kirian, a sophomore pitcher, earned top honors in the league by batting .583 with five home runs, 37 RBIs and 41 runs scored. She also was 21-5 with a 1.86 ERA as a pitcher.
