John Miller
LANCASTER — Wynford’s John Miller won the regional champion in the discus, qualifying for state in Division III competition Wednesday at Fairfield Union High School near Lancaster.
Miller threw 158-9 on his final throw after barely qualifying for the finals in the event. He fouled on his first two attempts and then got in a toss of just 125-0 to earn the last finals qualifying spot.
He got things going in the finals, throwing 155-2, 151-5 and finally 158-9.
Reedsville Eastern’s Tyler Cline finished second with a throw of 157-1, while Colonel Crawford’s Adam Stuckert was third at 155-8.
Teammate Nate Brown finished two spots out of state qualifying in the long jump, posting a best leap of 19-8.75 on his second try. New Boston Glenwood’s Matthew Mohr went 20-8.5 to win, while Liberty Union’s Colt Roth took the last state spot by jumping 20-3.75.
In preliminary events, Brown, a senior in his only year of high school track, finished 14th in the 100 dash in 11.86 and 14th in the 200 dash in 24.00.
Riverdale’s 3200 relay team of Chad Pever, Gage Hankins, Justin Wells and Jordan Conover took seventh place in 8:24.44 to earn two points in the meet. Columbus Academy won the race in 8:08.85, while Seneca East took the final state spot in fourth in 8:17.42.
Conover competes in the 800 run in the second day of competition at Fairfield Union. He enters with the fifth-best seed time.
The 800 run is scheduled to begin at 6:25 p.m.
