WILLARD — Wynford and Carey were named the favorites to win their leagues Tuesday evening in media voting held at the 224 Varsity Club in Willard.
The Royals, winners of seven straight North Central Conference championships, were tabbed the favorite again in the NCC Black Division, receiving 41 points, including six first-place votes. The other three first-place votes went to Galion, which finished with 36 points.
Ontario came in third place in the voting with 28 points, while Upper Sandusky finished just ahead of Bucyrus for fourth place, 16-14.
Buckeye Central, the state runner-up in Division IV, was the pick to repeat as NCC Silver Division champion, but barely, beating out Colonel Crawford, 41-40, with five first-place votes to four for the Eagles.
Riverdale was tabbed just ahead of Crestline for third place, 23-20, while Lucas came in fifth in the voting with 11 points.
In the Midland Athletic League, Carey earned six of nine first-place votes to dethrone Hopewell-Loudon as champion. The Blue Devils finished with 67 points to 61 points for the Chieftains, which picked up two first-place votes.
Seneca East was picked third with 54 points, while Tiffin Calvert took the fourth spot with 45 points and the other first-place vote.
Fremont St. Joseph edged Mohawk by one point, 35-34, for fifth place, while North Baltimore came in just ahead of Lakota, 15-13, for the seventh spot in the voting.
For the most part, voting in both leagues matched last year’s standings. The only exception in the NCC was that Lucas finished third in the Silver Division last year, ahead of both Riverdale and Crestline. In the MAL a season ago, Hopewell-Loudon topped Carey for first place and Calvert came in ahead of Seneca East for third.
Football season kicks off Aug. 24. Conference games in both leagues begin Sept. 14.
