Taking the handoff

Wynford’s Kristin Schiefer (from left) takes the handoff from Brooke Miller while Carey’s Mikala Putnam receives the baton from Oriana Billock during the first exchange of the 800 relay. The Blue Devils won (1:50.6) and Wynford was third (1:54.9).

MOUNT BLANCHARD — The Carey girls track team set two school records as they won the 11-team Riverdale Relays on Thursday night.
The Blue Devils scored 94 points to defeat Wynford and Arlington, who tied for second place with 76 points. Riverdale placed ninth (33 points). The Falcons edged out Carey, 90-81.25, for second place in the boys meet. Seneca East won with 124 points. Wynford was seventh (48).
Carey’s Oriana Billock, Monique Altvater and Dana Newell set the school record in the triple jump with a combined leap of 89-0.25. Billock (30-3.75) and Altvater (30-0.0) were the top two individual placers in the event.
The throwers relay of Paige Roszman, Claire Allison, Victoria Woods and Altvater set a school record with a time of 51.6.
“We’re very pleased with how we did overall,” Carey coach John Knickel said. “We finished very strong.”

Down to the wire

Riverdale’s Gage Hankins (from left) stays in front of Wynford’s Ben Stuckey during the 6400 relay. Stuckey caught Hankins to give the Royals second place (20:48.0), while the Falcons finished third (21:01.0).

The Blue Devils 800 relay team of Billock, Lauren Wenner, Gwen Wentling and Amber Spurlock (1:50.60) and the long jump trio of Billock, Roszman and Altvater (40-8.5) also picked up first-place finishes.
“Our (400) relay got beat by a (Division II) school and this is the first time in a while that (Carey has) been under 52.00,” Knickel said as his relay team of Roszman, Billock, Wentling and Wenner ran a 51.6.
Wynford picked up two relay and the only individual first places in tying for second place.
“They did very well,” Royals coach Julia Crall said. “With as hot as it was, even with a break between each distance event, it still wasn’t enough. High jumpers and throwers did well. Everyone is right about what they’ve been doing.”
Corri Ruffener won the 100 hurdles (15.1), while the freshman sprint medley team of Brooke Miller, Kalyn Heinle, Lydie Miller and Ellie Richmond ran a 2:02.1. The discus relay of Brenna Quinn, Sam Lambert and  Stormy Furney also were champions (263-9).
Riverdale was led by a second-place efforts in the distance medley (14:37.0), which comprised of Anna Penwell, Karen Wise, Lindsay Cole and Hannah Frey.

Long distance running

Carey’s Baylee Schertzer and Riverdale’s Lindsay Cole compete in the distance medley at the Riverdale Relays on Thursday. The Blue Devils placed seventh in the event, but won the meet.

“We’re really short on girls this year and we’re also currently facing a lot of injuries right now,” Falcons coach Amber Warren said. “There are a lot of tough teams, but we held our own.”
The Riverdale boys picked up two relay championships as they finished second in the team standings.
“I don’t think we did as well as I would have liked,” Falcons coach Jeremy Kloepfer said. “Running events were about where I thought we would be, but some of our field events just didn’t get it done.”
The freshman sprint medley team of Ian Thompson, Jacob Vent, Aaron Gil and Chad Pever won with a time of 1:47.5, while the 3200 relay (8:45.7) team of Pever, Justin Wells, Gage Hankins and Jordan Conover edged out Seneca East by less than two seconds.

Handing off

Riverdale’s Paige Pickett (left) begins the second leg of the 800 relay as she receives the baton from Kelsey Pope. The Falcons placed eighth in the event with a time of 2:01.6.

“We’re trying to get all of our guys sub-2:10,” Hankins said. “(As the second runner), I was just trying to keep first place and Justin did the same thing. It got close at the end, but Jordan had more kick.”
Carey’s Cory Larick again broke the school record for pole vault as he individually went the highest of any competitor at 14-6.
“He went 14-2.75 at Seneca East earlier this year, but we’ve been moving him up to 15-0 this year just to get him used to mentally preparing for 15 feet,” Blue Devils assistant Stan Stombaugh said.
Carey placed third in the event (24-6), while its lone first place came in the long jump relay as the team of Larick, Grant Wentling and Zach Logsdon went 51-11.5.

Bonus jumping

Carey’s Dana Newell goes for 5-2 during the high jump relay after having already claimed the individual title with a height of 5-0. The Blue Devils placed fourth in the event with a combined jump of 13-0.

The Royals boys won the throwers relay (51-5) and the discus relay (391-9). The discus relay consisted of Kyle Heinlen, John Miller and Devin Lutz, with Heinlen (141-7) and Miller (140-6) being the top two individuals in the event. Miller, Mathias Foght, Dakota Frazier and Heinlen were on the throwers relay.
Carey has a quick turnaround as it competes in the Ada Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Wynford competes in the Jesse Owens Classic on Sunday. Riverdale begins the North Central Conference meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wynford with pole vault, while the rest of the meet begins at 4 p.m. that Friday at Buckeye Central.
