Carey girls track finishes 5th at Liberty-Benton Invitational

FINDLAY — Carey’s girls were fifth, while the boys took seventh as the Liberty-Benton Invitational completed Tuesday following its postponement by bad weather Saturday.
The host Eagles dominated, winning the boys event with a 188-105 margin over Columbus Grove and with the girls holding a 150-88 margin over Bluffton. Carey’s girls scored 58 points, putting them only eight points out of third, while the Blue Devils boys had 29 points.
The Blue Devils’ only win came in the girls 400 relay with Paige Roszman, Oriana Billock, Gwen Wentling and Lauren Wenner winning in 53.16.
Dana Newell led Carey’s girls by placing in three individual events, led by her second-place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-0. She was third in both the 100 hurdles (17.18) and the shot put (36-0). Taylor Decker placed behind her teammate in sixth in the shot put with a throw of 33-6.25 and she was fourth in the discus with a throw of 113-1.
Billock placed sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.50 and was eighth in the long jump at 13-11.5. Wentling took fourth in the 200 dash (28.00), while Wenner was seventh in the same event in 28.76. Amber Spurlock took eighth place in the 400 dash in 1:04.26.
The Blue Devils were third in the 800 relay in 1:51.57 and fifth in the 3200 relay in 11:09.33.
Cory Larick led Carey’s boys with a second-place finish in the pole vault at 14-0. Jacob Goble was third in the shot put with a toss of 44-3, while Brandon Distel was fourth in the 800 run in 2:02.37. Kyle Swartz place seventh in the discus at 121-4.
Carey also placed fourth in the 400 relay in 46.46 and seventh in the 800 relay in 1:38.4.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the Riverdale Relays at 4 p.m. Thursday.
