Blue Devils even MAL record at 5-5

Down the line

Carey’s Corbin Blair sends a shot down the left field line Tuesday against Fremont St. Joseph. Blair went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the 12-9 victory.

CAREY — Pitching wins have eluded Carey’s only senior, Dillon Sammons, and it happened again Monday. But the Blue Devils still nabbed a victory, 12-9, against Fremont St. Joseph to even their Midland Athletic League record at 5-5.
Despite being the team ace, Sammons is just 1-7 on the year, and defense let him down in the sixth inning, giving up six unearned runs and forcing him out of the game. Freshman Satchel Strahm (5-1) came through with a big out and then the offense followed suit with a four-run bottom of the sixth to put Carey (9-14, 5-5 MAL) back on top.
Carey coach Joey Roark said he tried to leave in Sammons as long as he could in his final home game, but he started to tire on the mound.

Going for two

Carey third baseman Alex Naeyaert throws in an attempt to collect a second out on the play as he fielded a ground ball and touched third base for the first out. After trailing 2-0 early, the Blue Devils rallied for the win, 12-9.

“I’ve been here four years,” Roark said. “Dillon Sammons has been there since day one and never missed a practice and gives 100 percent all the time.”
Strahm got Fremont St. Joseph No. 4 hitter Zach Yeckley to pop out to first to get out of a jam in the sixth inning. The freshman then got things going offensively in the bottom of the inning with a double.
After an intentional walk to Sammons, Alex Naeyaert tied the game with an RBI single and Matt Holsinger put the Blue Devils on top with a triple.
St. Joseph (10-15, 6-5 MAL) scored twice in the first inning and the score remained 2-0 until Carey scored three times in the fourth inning. The Blue Devils took an 8-3 lead after five innings.
Naeyaert went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Corbin Blair was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Strahm was 2 for 4 and scored two runs. Holsinger finished with the triple and RBI and two runs scored.
Sammons went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs with four strikeouts. Strahm gave up one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Austin Jess was the losing pitcher.
Jason Yeckley led the Crimson Streaks with a 5-for-5 performance with three RBIs and two runs. Marcus Kerr was 3 for 3 with two runs scored.
The Blue Devils close out their season at 5 p.m. today at Mohawk.
