Wyandot Co. General Health District receives $16,964 Komen grant

The Wyandot County General Health District has been awarded a $16,964 grant by the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“Funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio will be utilized by Wyandot and Crawford County residents to increase mammography rates by providing access to breast cancer screening to uninsured or underinsured women and men 40-64 years of age,” said Darlene Steward, director of nursing and program director at Wyandot County General Health District. “These efforts will help support our fight against breast cancer.”
The money will be used to fund the Wyandot County Breast Health Initiative, which provides screening mammograms and diagnostic services to underinsured and uninsured women and men. The project also provides language assistance for individuals with limited English proficiency, assists with transportation and provides access to healthy meals to breast cancer patients currently in treatment.
The Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded more than $630,000 in community grants to 18 non-profit organizations during The Power of the Promise grants reception recently held in Toledo.
“In total, this year’s grant funds will support the delivery of 2,530 mammograms, 1,033 breast cancer treatment and support services, 1,025 breast health and educational services, 196 diagnostic procedures such as ultrasounds and biopsies and 75 clinical breast exams to the uninsured and underinsured in our area,” Komen Northwest Ohio Board of Directors President Mary Chris Skeldon said. “In addition, Komen Northwest Ohio distributes another $200,000 in small grants and mission education outreach as well as $278,000 to research to find the cures.”
Other area health facilities receiving grants included the Blanchard Valley Health System, which was awarded $31,355. Those funds will be used for the Hancock County Mammography Screening Initiative, which provides access to screening mammograms and diagnostic services to uninsured and underinsured women and men. Services are available at Eastern Woods Outpatient Center and Bluffton Hospital.
In the past 19 years, the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has funded nearly $7 million in local grants for life-saving breast health education, screening and treatment. In addition, nearly $2 million has been contributed to national research initiatives to find the cures. Grants are awarded to qualified organizations in the counties of Allen, Auglaize, Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Huron, Logan, Lucas, Mercer, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, Van Wert, Williams, Wood, Wyandot and Monroe County, Michigan.
