Carey Mayor Steve Smalley (from left), Wyandot County Council on Aging Executive Director Connie Geissinger and mistress of ceremonies Nancy Hall dressed the part during a pirate-themed Senior Day in Carey on Monday.
CAREY — The village of Carey celebrated Senior Citizens Day on Monday, with more than 80 people attending a program at Grace United Methodist Church.
The theme for the day was “Pirates of Carey.”
“About a year ago, I saw the movie Pirates of the Caribbean and I said, why not Carey-bean,” organizer Georgia Smiley said.
Servers and guests wore scarves, eye patches, pirate hats and hooks.
“I sure am having a good time,” Wyandot County Council on Aging Executive Director Connie Geissinger said. “It’s not everyday I get to wear a pirate hat.”
The menu included eye patch baked steak, saber potatoes (mashed red-skin potatoes), cannon ball beans, parrot bread and treasure chest of gold salad (sugar free orange Jell-O).
“It was wonderful,” said Fran Zimmerman, who attends the Senior Day program each year. “I’ve been here before and every time it gets better and better. It’s nice to see a lot of my old friends.”
“I just like the socialization,” added Bernice Thome, who also attends the event each year.
Mayor Steve Smalley read a proclamation declaring Monday as Senior Day in Carey.
“When I looked around the room, I thought of all the knowledge that must be sitting here in this room,” Smalley said to the seniors. “I think back to where you guys have come from, the knowledge of telephones and TVs and cell phones and computers. … I challenge each of you to go home to your children, your grandchildren, even your great-grandchildren and tell them stories. I think they are going to be so interested in hearing those stories and what the difference is in what you guys lived in to where we’re at today.”
Entertainment was provided by guitar duo Butch Mundy and Jim Moll.
“I want to thank everybody for coming,” said Bonnie Feasel, site manager for the Carey Senior Depot. “It was a nice party and we enjoyed having everybody. It was a great theme.”
Upper Sandusky will hold its Senior Day program at 11:30 a.m. Friday at John Stewart United Methodist Church. Call 419-294-5733 for tickets.
