Nevada siblings win many prizes at 161st Wyandot County Fair

Owen and KyLee Sparks show off some of their prize-winning items at the Wyandot County Fair. During their first year participating in fair contests, the brother and sister duo from Nevada has racked up several prizes.

The first time is proving to be a charm for KyLee and Owen Sparks.
The sister and brother from Nevada have won big at the Wyandot County Fair. Ten-year-old Owen has won ribbons in all five contests he entered at the fair. Kylee, 8, has won ribbons in six of her seven contests. This is the first year either has participated in 4-H or fair contests.
“I’m very proud of them,” said Alissa Domro, the children’s grandmother. “… We come to the fair every year and we decided that they need to be involved in activities to keep their minds off of other things. … This year, they decided that they wanted to try 4-H. (KyLee) did Cloverbuds and she graduates Sunday to be a 4-Her next year. … (Owen) is a member of the Nevada Bobcats (4-H club). ”
Owen’s stuffed animals won first prize in the junior collections class. He won second prizes in the house plants class for his cactus entry, in the wood class for both his tool box and toy derby car, and in the collectibles class for his trolls.

“Owen also got third place in archery for all 4-Hers in Wyandot County for his bow and arrow,” Domro said.
KyLee won big in the collectibles class, taking home a first-place ribbon in the Walt Disney memorabilia category for her Mickey Mouse stuffed doll. She also won a first-place ribbon in the collections class for another doll and in the wood class for her birdhouse.
“I entered the dolls because I knew I was probably going to be the only one that got in (the contest),” said KyLee, a third-grade student at Wynford Elementary School. “I didn’t even know I was going to enter Mickey Mouse, but my grandmother decided I was going to enter it.”
“I just let them go down through the list (of contests) and pick what they wanted to do for the categories,” Domro added.
KyLee won second prize in the freestanding scarecrow contest and for her baby carriage in the collectibles class. KyLee’s salt and pepper shakers won third prize in the china and pottery category, which also is a contest in the collectibles class.

KyLee Sparks’ scarecrow won second prize in the freestanding scarecrow competition at the Wyandot County Fair. Sparks, 8, has won ribbons in six of the seven contests she has entered at the fair.

“(KyLee) won something in everything that she entered, except her decorated vegetable,” Domro said. “She also got a participation (ribbon) for the Cloverbud booth.”
KyLee has won on a total of $20.50 in prize money. Owen has won $9.50.
“We wanted to try something new (by entering contests at the fair) and we knew that we were going to get money for it,” said Owen, a fifth-grade student at Wynford.
KyLee still has a chance to win another contest Saturday, when she will be taking part in the spaghetti and meatballs competition, which will be judged by Wyandot County law enforcement officers.
“I love my spaghetti; I want to eat it,” KyLee said. “My dad (Michael Sparks) is going to help me and he is a very good cook. I don’t know what his secret recipe is, but he is going to help me make meatballs (today) and spaghetti on Saturday. The judges are going to like it.”
