An Upper Sandusky man was severely burned when fire destroyed his South Fifth Street home early this morning.
According to an Upper Sandusky Fire Department report, Steve Beidelschies called 911 at 1:06 this morning saying the house next door to him at 318 1/2 S. Fifth St. was on fire and “going up fast.” Steve Beidelschies’ brother Barry Beidelschies, who lived in the home, suffered severe burns before escaping to his brother’s home for help.
Barry Beidelschies was taken to Wyandot Memorial Hospital with full thickness burns to both feet and burns to the top of the head, shoulders and hands. The USFD report states he also had redness to his face and back.
Beidelschies was flown by Life Flight to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where hospital representatives said he is in serious condition.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy flames and smoke coming out of the front door and windows on the north side of the house. Flames also were coming through the roof on the front quarter of the north side of the house.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
