NEVADA — Roy S. “Sam” Johnson, of rural Nevada, died at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, May 6, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73.
Born June 11, 1938 in Crawford County, he was a son of Roy D. and Beulah (Cress) Johnson, both deceased. He married Ellen Markley on June 28, 1959 in Nevada Lutheran Church and she survives.
Also surviving are four children, Kim (Kevin) Kirgis, of Bloomville; Jami (Don) Niederkohr, of Upper Sandusky; Steven Johnson, of Nevada; and L. Ann (Troy) Johnson, of Nevada; six grandchildren, Ryan (Heather) Ward, Rachael (Jordan) Bowersox, Aaron (Mindy) Niederkohr, Jordan (Pamela) Johnson, Devin Johnson and Aidan Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Mason Ward, Shelby Bowersox and Trey Johnson; a twin brother, Ray (Nancy) Johnson, of Marion; two sisters, Beverly (Don) Clark, of Monnett; and Connie (Ron) Fahl, of Bucyrus; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Burkey.
Mr. Johnson retired from Swan Hose, Bucyrus, after 51 years of employment, last working in the receiving department.
He was a member of the Nevada Lutheran Church and the Crawford Antique Farm Association and the Indian Mill Antique Association antique tractor clubs. He enjoyed collecting and restoring and showing his Allis Chalmers tractors at various events.
Mr. Johnson also enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, bike riding, vegetable gardening, cutting wood and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Chelsea Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
