Paul Yeater

Paul A. Yeater, Upper Sandusky, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at his residence. He was 86.
Born March 5, 1922 in Wharton, he was a son of Mohler and Ruth (Enders) Yeater. He married Gladys Heffelfinger on Nov. 13, 1943 in Upper Sandusky and she survives.
Mr. Yeater also is survived by three sons, Robert L., McCutchenville; and Don and David A., both of Upper Sandusky; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia Troiano, Tiffin; and Hazel Bakies, Carey.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandchild; four brothers, Jay, Irvin, John and Harry; and two sisters, Alice Rose and Pearl Myers.
Mr. Yeater was a 1940 graduate of Salem High School. He had been the owner and operator of Yeater's Laundry and Dry Cleaning in Upper Sandusky since 1961, retiring after 25 years. Before that, he had worked for Lite Star Oil as a rural delivery man.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Yeater joined the United States Army, serving in World War II in the 191st Chemical Division.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2842 and American Legion Post No. 250. He was a former member of AMVETS No. 777 and the Wyandot County Rod and Gun Club.
Mr. Yeater enjoyed going to Canada and fishing.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Stephen Huebscher officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery, where military graveside services will be performed by local service organizations. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Art Monroe

NEVADA - Art Monroe, a longtime Nevada resident, died peacefully at his home at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008. He was 98.
Born June 20, 1909 in Vernon Township, Scioto County, he was a son of Joseph and Hannah Katharine (Patten) Monroe. He married Mae Allen on Oct. 15, 1932 in New Boston, and she died June 20, 1994.
Mr. Monroe is survived by three sons, Roger (Susan), Bucyrus; Marvin (Pat), Sunbury; and David (Becky), Martel; four daughters, Norma (Charles) Bowers and Cathy (Tadd) Cook, both of Bucyrus; Jane (Harry) Vorrath, El Cajon, Calif.; and Bonnie (Jim) Burch, Upper Sandusky; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first child, Wildeth Joy, who died in childhood; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Raymond, Joseph and Waldo; and four sisters, Mary A. Hurst, Louella K. Monroe, Irma R. Piskorowski and Irene Newman.
Mr. Monroe was a graduate of Wheelersburg High School and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was the proprietor of Art's Electric on Garrett Street, Nevada, from 1940 to 1997, where he was known to be a class A troubleshooter. He had farmed and raised ducks prior to his career as an electrician.
He was a charter member of the Nevada Fire Department and the Nevada Lions Club and a 50-year member of the K of P Lodge No. 234, where he was past chancellor commander in 1964.
He was very community-minded and was involved in many civic projects through the years. He was an avid reader and a prolific writer of both prose and verse. He enjoyed gardening, doing crossword puzzles, fishing, harmonicas, making apple butter and jelly from his fruit, fixing things and inventing tools of practical use.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Nevada Cemetery. There is no visitation.

Helen Gier

Helen Louise Gier, Upper Sandusky, died at 7:28 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 89.
Born Sept. 5, 1918 in Mifflin Township, Wyandot County, she was a daughter of Karl and Charlotte (Pfeifer) Koehler. She married Gerald Gier on Oct. 2, 1939 at Bethany Lutheran Parsonage, Upper Sandusky, and he died June 4, 2001.
Mrs. Gier is survived by a son, R. Jerry (Sara), Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Barbara S. Gier, Glouster; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Gier, DeLeon Springs, Fla.; and Scott and Jamie Gier, both of Upper Sandusky; and seven great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Ashley, Sara, Samuel, Hannah, Jacob and Olivia Gier.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan Koehler.
Mrs. Gier was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Upper Sandusky, for more than 50 years.
She also was a volunteer for Wyandot Memorial Hospital Guild for many years.
She enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska and Europe and spending time in Florida. She also enjoyed boating and fishing at Lake Erie, playing cards with various card groups and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Henry Seibert officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
