SYCAMORE — Lester J. Spitler, of 7651 TR 17, Tiffin, died at 9:42 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at Toledo Hospital. He was 88.
Born May 6, 1924, he was a son of the late Elmer and Emma (Goetz) Spitler. He married Opal E. Hieber on Aug. 14, 1949 and she died April 25, 2002.
Mr. Spitler is survived by two daughters, Joyce Spitler, Nilse; and Barbara J. (David) Sander, Genoa; a son, David J. (Barbara) Spitler, Tiffin; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hieber, Chatfield.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Glenn Spitler.
Mr. Spitler was a 1943 graduate of Melmore High School. He was a lifelong farmer, farming on the same farm on which he was born.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Spitler was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Tiffin.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Pam Easterday officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore, where Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250 will conduct a military graveside service. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
