Helen I. Weikert, of Upper Sandusky and formerly of Wharton, died at 12:44 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Fairhaven Community, Upper Sandusky. She was 98.
Born Oct. 1, 1913 in Hiram, she was a daughter of the late Orville and Goldie (Bovee) Phillips. She married Omar O. Wentz on Aug. 25, 1935 and he died May 20, 1962. She married George Weikert on March 18, 1966 and he died April 3, 1967.
Mrs. Weikert is survived by a daughter, Barbara A. (Robert) Batton, Upper Sandusky; five grandchildren, Natalie (David) Young, Deidre Regenhard, Renee (Mike) Morris, Leslie (Mike) Miller and Scott (Jenny) Batton; 10 great-grandchildren, Danielle and Matt Young, Presley and Corbin Rengert, Logan, Riley and Parker Morris, Owen Miller and Kirk and Sarah Batton; and two sisters, Eleanor Monday and Carolyn Peeler.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and two stepsons.
Mrs. Weikert was a homemaker and assisted her husband, Omar, on the family farm. When she was in her early 50s, she went to school to become a licensed practical nurse. She retired July 1, 1979 from Wyandot Memorial Hospital, where she cared for patients in the coronary care and obstetrics units.
A long-time member of Wharton First Church of God, Mrs. Weikert was a Sunday school teacher and organist for many years. She later joined Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky.
Mrs. Weikert enjoyed writing poetry, gardening and working on crossword puzzles with her neighbors. She loved spending time with her family.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Jim Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at Wharton-Richland-Union Cemetery, Wharton. Visitation will be held from 12-1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
