Gary C. Ward, age 74, of Upper Sandusky, passed away at 2:24 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at the Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.
Gary was born June 25, 1945, in Tiffin, to James and Violet “Dolly” (Karg) Ward, both of whom are deceased. He married Wanda Foor on Aug. 24, 1968, in Upper Sandusky, and she survives.
He also is survived by his siblings, Joyce (Richard) Shelton, Greenwood, South Carolina; Jeanette (Rodney) VanSickle, Fremont; Howard (Carolyn) Ward, Upper Sandusky; and Linda Pell, Battle Creek, Michigan; along with many nieces and nephews.
Gary was Certified Public Accountant and owned and operated Gary Ward CPA & Associates LLP, along with his partner, Sara Pahl, CPA. Before that Gary was in business with John Houser and together they practiced as Houser and Ward CPA. He also, in his earlier days, worked for his father in the family construction business.
He was a 1963 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, where he lettered in football, and went on to attend Ohio University and then Findlay College graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. He continued his education at Findlay College in accounting.
Gary served with the 16th Engineering Battalion in Germany with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Vietnam War. He then continued his service with the Army Reserves retiring after 27 years as a lieutenant colonel.
He was an over 50-year member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he was a deacon and served on the consistory along with many committees throughout the years. Gary was a member and past president of the Lions Club, BPOE No. 83, founding member of the Wyandot County Economic Development, past board member and treasurer for 10 years with the United Church Homes, the Upper Sandusky Chamber of Commerce and the Warpole Lodge No. 176 F&AM for more than 35 years. He also belonged to McCutchen Chapter No. 96 R.A.M. and Upper Sandusky Council No. 98 R&SM, all three Masonic groups are located in Upper Sandusky.
Gary enjoyed woodworking, history, working outside and reading everyday his Wall Street Journal.
Funeral services for Gary C. Ward are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Evangelical United Church of Christ in Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Brad McKibben officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church following services. Visitations will be held from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with a 7:45 p.m. Masonic Service. There also will be one hour of visitation Tuesday at Trinity UCC.
