Wynford misses on new school levy

BUCYRUS — The levy for a new Wynford seventh through 12th grade building did not pass on Tuesday by a 1,654-980 no vote, according to unofficial results by the Wyandot County Board of Elections.
“The community has spoken and they’ve spoken rather clearly,” Wynford Local Schools Superintendent Steve Mohr said. “All of the great things going on at Wynford will occur, but not in the new building.”
Mohr previously had wanted to use $10.7 million in state funding and $9.4 million in local tax revenue from the school levy if it had passed to tear down the 50-year-old school and build a new new school for grades 7-12.
“They don’t think there’s a need for a 7-12 building,” Mohr said. “We have to respect that and move on.”
The seventh and eighth grades currently are being schooled in modulars.
The Wynford Board of Education officially accepted more than 50 percent of the funding for the plan from the state to go in conjunction with the expected funding if the levy would have passed.
“We need to step back and look at things,” Wynford School Board President Rhonda Rowland said. “Initially we went into this with the money turned down twice. I feel they talked to us Tuesday night. A lot of good things are happening at Wynford right now.”
