Mail carriers to Stamp Out Hunger

Upper Sandusky mail carriers will be doing their part to Stamp Out Hunger this weekend.
Postal workers are asking Upper Sandusky area residents to leave food items near their mailboxes Saturday morning, when mail carriers will pick up the items when they are delivering mail. All items will be donated to the Christian Food Center.
“It’s one of those feel good things; it makes you feel good doing it,” local Stamp Out Hunger coordinator Mark DeWitt said. “It’s a little extra work, but for the benefit of the people, it’s not a chore at all. We get pleasure out of delivering the food to the food pantry. It all goes to a good cause and it feels good to do things for people who are less fortunate.”
Stamp Out Hunger is a national initiative.
“It’s been going on for 20 years,” said DeWitt, a mail carrier who started the effort in Upper Sandusky. “I started carrying in Findlay 19 years ago and at that point, the drive was just getting going.”
This is the third year Upper Sandusky letter carriers have taken part in the food drive, collecting more than 2,000 pounds the first year and 2,390 pounds last year. Mail carriers are hoping for even more donations this year.
“It really helps out the food pantry,” Christian Food Center board member Darlene Schaadt said. “It fills our shelves up once again and it’s very much appreciated.”
For anyone who is unable to donate Saturday but still would like to participate, items may be placed out for pick up Friday or Monday.
“We will be picking up food Friday and Monday for people who may be leaving town or who may forget,” DeWitt said. “We will take the food whenever we can get it.
“They can put things out in a grocery bag, a paper bag, a box or they can put it out loose if they don’t have anything,” he added. “Whatever they put it in, we’re going to take it. All we ask is they have the food out by 8 in the morning Saturday because we have a few early routes.”
Upper Sandusky area residents will be receiving a postcard in the mail today with more details about the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
