Carey BOE announces its newest member at meeting

CAREY — Announced at the Monday meeting, the newest member of Carey’s Board of Education is Greg McCartney.
McCartney, of rural Carey, replaces Brian Will, who stepped down because of a work conflict with board meetings. McCartney will serve out the remainder of the term through Dec. 21, 2013.
“It was like any other interview process,” Superintendent Mark Vehre said. “We just felt he was the best candidate at the time. He was sworn in at the beginning of the meeting and he participated at the meeting.”
He was chosen out of five applicants.
McCartney originally ran in the 2007 general election against Will and board member Mike Roszman, but finished third among 12 candidates.
The other main topic on the evening was about an ongoing effort to find out more information about the concern area residents have over the condition of the school and window project, the board entered into an agreement with William G. O’Callaghan Jr. to provide a wide range of community engagement support services at a cost of $800 per month, plus reimbursement for mileage.
“He’s consulting on an community outreach, that was started by a letter to the editor, expressing the renovations to the (school) building and the cost being put toward an older facility,” Vehre said. “We’ve talked about surveying and through the process, I came up with him and he has a very good grassroots, get-out-to-the-public type of approach.
“The initial thing is meeting with the staff and finding out their concerns with the facility and then meeting with the public with a ‘coffee-meeting’ and find out what they want,” he added. “From there, we’ll have open forums and then decide in what way we need to go from there.”
The school board also:
— Recognized Jennifer Hill, Scott Ewing and the prom committee; and Carey Plus and Lois Kurtz for sponsoring the after-prom.
— Recognized DECA teacher Derek Cunningham and the financial literacy promotion team of Kristina Hill, Jenna Jesko and Amanda May for placing in the top 16 at the international career development conference at Salt Lake City.
— Recognized Sha Niederkohr for being named student of the year in the Office Service II Program and Alyssa McDonald, Jay Reinart and Richard Sullivan on being named to the National Technical Honor Society.
— Approved the 2012 graduation list, contingent on students meeting all graduation requirements as outlined in the Carey Board of Education Policy No. 5460.
— Approved contracts and agreements with the Wyandot County Health Department for nursing services for Carey Schools and OLC for the 2012-13 school year; with the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center for a variety of educational services for the 2012-13 school year; Membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2012-13 school year; Cooperative agreement with the Purmort Brothers Insurance Agency for school student insurance for the 2012-13 school year; Three-year agreement with Julian & Grube, Inc. for assistance in compiling financial statements on the cash-basis of accounting; Agreement with TRECA to participate in their Research and Development Pilot; and an agreement with W.A.T.C.H. TV, to authorize the superintendent to execute the agreement, effective April 20, 2012.
— Approved the disposal of books, educational materials, cafeteria tables and equipment.
— Approved the sale, disposal or recycling of outdated, poor condition, and/or unused books, educational materials, cafeteria tables and equipment as submitted.
— Approved overnight trips for the girls’ basketball team’s participation in a camp at Baldwin-Wallace from June 9-10; and FFA student participation in an officer retreat this summer.
— Approved changes to the elementary student handbook.
— Accepted the following donations: Two Zoll AED plus defibrillators from the athletic booster and assistance of the Wyandot County EMS, $2,750; Eight soccer balls and eight basketballs from Kurtz Shoe Store for the elementary; $1,000 worth of educational videos from Louis Schoenberger for the high school; Five $20 professional development scholarships from David and Karen Conley to send intervention specialist staff and building principals to a conference in Huron; 275 bags of single-serve potato chips valued at $190 from Ballreich’s, of Tiffin, for the elementary field day; and donation of the book, “How did that get in my lunchbox?” to the elementary library from Wyandot County Farm Bureau.
— Approved new/revisions/replacements to board of education policies.
— Attested the the Carey Exempted Village School District had adopted and is enforcing a nutrition standards policy that considers that requirements of Ohio Revised Code 3313.814 and governs the types of food and beverages that may be sold on the premises of its schools.
— Approved the following staff members as elementary summer school teachers: Elizabeth Snyder, kindergarten reading; Mandy O’Flaherty, first grade reading; Eileen Roszman, second grade reading; Brittany Baldridge, third grade reading; and Mindy Sidor, Rachel Roszman and Teresa Jacoby as substitutes.
— Approved Shea Etzinger’s request for maternity leave, effective April 10, 2012 through the end of the school year.
— Approved Donaldy Jones and Eileen Roszman as co-advisors for elementary student council for the 2012-13 school year.
— Accepted the resignation of Jennifer Hill as prom co-chairman.
Also, the June board meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 18.
