Health department offers seasonal flu vaccine

The Wyandot County Health Department now is offering seasonal influenza vaccines for the 2013-14 flu season.
A routine annual influenza vaccine is recommended for all people 6 months and older. This year’s flu vaccine contains four types of influenza viruses as opposed to three virus types in previous years, according to a press release from the health department.
Certain groups of individuals are considered at higher risk of developing influenza. These groups include children younger than 5 years old, especially those younger than 2 years; anyone 50 years and older; pregnant women; people with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease and cardiovascular disease; health care workers and household caregivers of children younger than 5 years old and adults older than 50 years.
Contraindications of the vaccine include those who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs or have had a severe reaction after a previous dose of flu vaccine; those who developed Guillian-Barre syndrome six weeks after a previous dose of influenza vaccine; those with moderate to severe illness and infants less than 6 months of age.
Walk-in clinics will be held at the following locations:
— 3-6 p.m. today, Masters’ Building at the Wyandot County Fair, for people ages 19 and older.
— 2-6 p.m. Sept. 23, Sycamore Community Center;
— 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 24, Carey Emergency Medical Services;

The health department has several types of flu vaccine available for this year’s flu season. Flu Mist (intranasal) is available for healthy children ages 2-18 for $21 per dose. Intramuscular vaccines are available for children 6 months to 18 years for $21 per dose.
Intramuscular vaccines for adults 19 years and older will be $37 for the Quadrivalent vaccine and $31 for Trivalent vaccine. Insurance billing will be provided to individuals who have Aetna, Anthem, Medical Mutual, United Health Care, Medicare Part B and Medicaid. Insurance cards must be presented at the time of service. Adults 19 years and older who do not have the above listed insurance options and are required to pay at the time of service will be given a $5 discount per adult vaccine.
Additional flu clinics will be scheduled and announced at a later time.
