“The Sounds of Music,” a 12-member women’s vocal ensemble, is getting ready to begin its summer concert season.
Founded in 1990 by the late Marilyn Walter, the women who were in the nun’s chorus of the Star Players community theater production of “The Sound of Music” in Upper Sandusky discovered they enjoyed singing together and wanted to continue to do so.
The group appeared at local festivals, churches and special community events in the early ’90s, but in recent years has concentrated on a repertoire of contemporary Christian, gospel and inspirational songs. “The Sounds of Music” now almost exclusively appear in churches and does mainly a summer tour. Its program includes music accompanied by piano, and a capella.
Membership in the ensemble has grown and changed to include women who were not part of “The Sound of Music” cast. Two of the original “nuns,” Norma Frederick and Terri Long, remain. The summer of 2012 will mark the group’s 22nd anniversary.
Stephanie Lehman is the director, while Marilyn Lehman serves as the accompanist. Other members are Claudia Cisar, Carol Minehart, Dottie McGinty, Sue Pummell, Mary Walton, Diane Wintersteller, Linda Miller and Cheryl Wolfe.
