Gillig lifts Jackets past Warriors

Leading scorer featured

BASCOM — Any team that faces the New Riegel girls basketball team is tasked with finding a way to slow down senior Brianna Gillig. Gillig is the all-time leading scorer in the New Riegel girls basketball team’s program history and surpassed the 1,000 point career mark last season.

USMS having parent meeting

Upper Sandusky Middle School will host a spring sports parent meeting for track and field athletes at 6 p.m. Feb. 27. Girls will meet in the auditorium, and boys will meet in Jeff Fett’s art room No. 119.

Registration for softball starting

Upper Sandusky fastpitch softball signups for girls currently in kindergarten through eighth grade are being held the next two weeks at the Upper Sandusky Fire Department. Signup dates are 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, 6-8 p.m. Feb. 26, and 11 a.m. to noon March 3.

Wrestling set at Upper MS

The third annual Cory Washburn Memorial Wrestling Tournament is March 18 at Upper Sandusky Middle School, 390 W. Walker St., Upper Sandusky. Proceeds benefit the USMS eighth grade class trip to Washington, D.C.

LEXINGTON — Down by 12 at halftime, Wynford knew what had to be done to get back in the game. The Royals got a whole lot of stop, scores and stops to dominate the second half of a 42-31 victory against Colonel Crawford in a Division III sectional semifinal game Tuesday night at Lexington.

Wenger believed to be first Upper girl to qualify for state swim meet

In what is believed to be the first time in the history of the Upper Sandusky High School girls swimming program, junior Abbey Wenger has qualified to compete at the State Swimming and Diving Tournament. Wenger placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke at the district swimming meet and eventually learned that her time was fast enough to qualify her for the state meet that will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium at Canton McKinley High School. She is seeded 17th.

FOSTORIA — Cody Luzader’s 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining held up as the winning basket as Carey held on to beat Fostoria, 49-48, in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday night at Fostoria. Fostoria (3-17) had multiple chances to regain the lead in the final seconds but committed a pair of turnovers, and after coming up with a steal, Dylan Sheets missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Warriors hold off Streaks

SYCAMORE — Ryan Lacey scored 13 points to help Mohawk hold off Fremont St. Joseph, 47-45, in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday night. Zach Hayman added 12 points for the Warriors (15-6), who have set a new school record for regular-season wins and matched the school mark for overall wins.

All three Upper Sandusky competition cheer squads took first place Sunday in the Lancer Winter Cheer Competition at Lincolnview High School. The Little Rams and junior high teams completed their seasons, while the high school team will compete at state March 4 at St. John Arena in Columbus.
