All three Upper Sandusky cheerleading competition squads took first place for the second year in a row in the Mindi K. Justice Winter Cheer Extravaganza on Saturday at Riverdale. Courtney Sebenoler coaches the varsity team, and Stacy Taylor and Krista Kenner coach the middle school and Little Rams teams.

Mohawk, Carey get top 2 seeds in duals

Mohawk and Carey earned the top two seeds in Division III Sub-Region 18-A for the OHSAA regional wrestling dual team tournament. Both teams had an opportunity to host the regional quarterfinal round Jan. 27, but only the Warriors will.

Upper Sandusky High School senior Betsy Young took first place at the Tri Village Powerlifting meet Saturday. She tied her personal record of 150 pounds in the bench press and set a PR in the dead lift for a total of 480 pounds.

Upper junior high wrestling takes 5th place

FOSTORIA — The Upper Sandusky junior high wrestling team was fifth among 21 teams Saturday in a tournament at Fostoria. Allan Ramos led the Rams by placing first, while Brayzin McDaniel took second place and Garrett Thomas was third.

Upper Sandusky dominated the first round of Northern 10 Athletic Conference play, but the team that gave them as good a game as anyone was Carey. The Blue Devils again appeared for most of one half to have what it takes to compete with the Rams on Saturday night before Upper Sandusky asserted itself and quickly blew open the game in a 71-41 victory.

CAREY — For 40 years, the Carey Classic has been held in the school’s gym at the school’s location on South Street. Next year, it will move to the new school on South Vance Street, making the host Blue Devils the final champion at the original school after they ran away with the title Saturday.

BUCYRUS — Momentum is a funny thing in basketball. Saturday, Wynford flipped the switch with a defensive adjustment at just the right time in a 51-47 victory over Ridgedale.

Upper boys swimming tops Columbian, Norwalk

TIFFIN — Upper Sandusky’s boys rolled to wins against Tiffin Columbian, 120-29, and Norwalk, 116-53, in a double dual swim meet Saturday at the YMCA. The Tornadoes girls edged the Rams, 96-74, while Upper Sandusky topped the Truckers, 99-71.
