WASHINGTON — National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson recently encouraged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prepare for increased economic instability and financial stress for American family farmers and ranchers through the USDA Certified Agricultural Mediation Program.

The Wyandot Soil and Water Conservation District hosted its 67th annual meeting Thursday. Wyandot SWCD board of supervisors chairman Jeff Bowen, who was re-elected to a second term during the meeting, welcomed those who gathered in the Masters’ Building at the Wyandot County Fairgrounds.

MARYSVILLE — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted the Best of the Buckeye shows at the Ohio State Fair from July 29 through Aug. 9, with the third overall Mainetainer heifer award going to breeders Gary Kalb and Eric King of Meg-Jer Farms, Sycamore, and exhibitor Caitlin Schaub, of Wapakoneta.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — From a visit to a cattle ranch in May to the Aug. 4 volunteer work at the Ohio State Fair, members of the Riverdale FFA chapter have stayed busy this summer.

Eligible producers now formally may enroll in the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs for 2014 and 2015, the U.S. Department of Agricultural has announced. The enrollment period began June 17 and will end Sept. 30.

The Wyandot County Farm Bureau will offer a free class on canning and freezing vegetables for members of the public. The workshop will focus on what to do with extra vegetables from gardens, how to take advantage of grocery store produce sales and best ways to store vegetables. The Wyandot County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting Aug. 30 at John Stewart United Methodist Church, 130 W. Johnson St., Upper Sandusky. Doors will open for a candidate reception beginning at 12 p.m.

The Crawford, Sandusky, Seneca, and Wyandot soil and water conservation districts each will host meetings to review the new manure application law passed by the 131st General Assembly referred to as Senate Bill 1. Producers are welcome to attend any of the meetings that fit their schedules.
