County soil judging contests held recently

County contest

The Wyandot County Soil Judging Contest took place Sept. 21 on the farm of Jim Smalley just east of Upper Sandusky. Agriculture students from four county schools competed in two different soil judging contests, the agriculture (rural) contest and the urban contest. In the agriculture contest, students evaluate soil for land use and limitations for crop growth and have to select best management practices to overcome limitations found.

BUCYRUS — The Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District recently held its 73rd annual meeting at Pickwick Place. One of the main events at the meeting is the SWCD board of supervisor’s election. Paul E. Hartschuh was elected to the Crawford SWCD Board of Supervisors for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1.

The Carey FFA chapter held its annual officer retreat over the summer in Loudonville. All officers were able to attend the retreat. During the three-day retreat, the officers participated in leadership and team building activities.

Thiel wins distinguished service award from county Farm Bureau

Awards, elections and family fun highlighted the Wyandot County Farm Bureau’s 2018 annual meeting held recently at Ellis Lake. Continuing President Kayla Weaver presided over elections, resulting in two new members for the board of trustees, Travis Kimmel and Ethan Smalley, as well as Nate Bair and W. Kyle Brown being elected as delegates for next year’s Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting.

Wyandot County 4-H members were judged for the 2018 animal and garden projects Saturday inside the Arena at the Wyandot County Fairgrounds. Over 200 youth with well over 200 animal projects including horse, rabbit, poultry, goat, sheep, swine, dairy, beef and garden were judged in the biggest pre-fair event.
